Columbus Stats

The capitol of the Buckeye State is situated nearly in the center of the state in Franklin County.  Columbus is the largest city in Ohio with a population over 700,000.  Franklin County has well over 1,000,000 people.  Columbus is home to The Ohio State University which has a student body of over 50,000.

Highways

The two main interstates that pass through Columbus are I-70 (east-west) and I-71 (northeast/southwest).  Commonly referred to as the "Outer Belt," I-270 is a circular beltway that runs around the perimeter of the city.  I-670 is a spur that connects downtown Columbus with the Port Columbus airport.  State Road 315 is a limited access freeway that runs between downtown Columbus and I-270 on the north side, providing relief from busy I-71 and allowing freeway access to The Ohio State University.  US 23 runs north/south and connects Columbus with Toledo and Portsmouth, OH.  US 33 runs northwest/southeast and connects Columbus with Fort Wayne, IN and Athens, OH (home of Ohio University) .

Transportation

In addition to the Port Columbus Airport, public ground transportation in the Columbus area is provided by the buses of COTA (Central Ohio Transportation Authority).  There is no passenger rail service in Columbus or Central Ohio.

Geology

There are two main rivers that travel through Columbus.  The Scioto River enters the city from the northwest and runs south through downtown.  The Olentangy State Scenic River runs north/south just east of the Scioto.  The two rivers join in downtown Columbus immediately south of the Route 315 and I-670 interchange.  Located north of the city, the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir, Alum Creek Lake, and Hoover Reservoir provide drinking water and flood control for the area.  Columbus is on the very northwestern edge of the Appalachian Mountain Plateau and, as a result, parts of northeastern and southeastern Columbus have rolling hills, bluffs, and ravines.  Both High Banks and Blendon Woods metro parks in Columbus are good places to see this geology.  Not to mention, that they are pretty cool parks to visit.

Climate

Since we are situated in the midwest we have the classic four seasons.  See this page for more info on climate trends in the area.

Sports

In addition to The Ohio State Buckeyes, we are host to four professional teams including The Columbus Clippers (a AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals), The Columbus Crew (MLS), The Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL), and the Columbus Destroyers (AFL).
